Stories of people who decided to come and stay.

Each week we'll post a new story from someone who is a member of Curtis. If you've been a part of Curtis for years, you may discover something new about folks you know. If you are new to Curtis, or just checking us out, this will help you get to know us better.

In the summer of 1972 I came to Curtis to start a music program in Curtis School. That is why I came, but what is more important is why I stayed.

I met and married my husband here. Then, when our children were born, Curtis supported our efforts to raise them in the ways of the Lord. Our church family has continued to support our family during our thirty-six years here through each celebration and crisis.

God has blessed Curtis Baptist Church with people who show the love of Christ through their genuine concern, encouragement, and prayer support.

I am thankful to be part of a church where the Truth is taught uncompromisingly, and evangelism, discipleship, and prayer are a priority.

We didn’t choose Curtis Baptist…..God chose it for us!

It’s an arduous task every time our family moves.  The military requires it nearly every two to three years.  The most important things to choose in any move are where to live, where to send our children to school, and, of course, where to worship.  We began praying about these things even before we moved to Augusta.  Before we even arrived, the Lord opened doors and provided us with the ideal home.  Once we reported to Fort Gordon for duty, a work colleague told us about Curtis School.  Almost immediately after praying with the administrator and meeting our son’s teacher, we knew this was the place that he needed to be and where God wanted him.  So, we had a place to live and a place for our son to go to school.  Now all we needed to do was find a church.  That’s easier said than done in a town with over 100 Baptist churches!
We visited several local churches both big and small.  We added Curtis to the list once God showed us that was the school He wanted our son to attend.  Once we arrived at Curtis, some members immediately recognized us as visitors, and they were very generous in the time they spent to make sure we knew where to attend Sunday School and where to take our daughter to the nursery.  We were immediately struck how friendly everyone was and how incredibly caring the nursery workers were to both us and our daughter.  Throughout both Sunday School and the Worship Service, we were continually impressed and delighted how welcomed we felt and what a pleasant atmosphere existed at Curtis.  It didn’t feel just like another church – it felt like a big family!
From beginning to end, we absolutely loved the worship service.  The music was uplifting and genuine, and the message we received from God was solid.  The common thing that struck both of us was that God was not just a part of this worship service – He was the FOCUS of it all, and you could tell a difference!  We couldn’t wait to come back the next week!  After a couple of weeks of praying about it and continuing to attend, God clearly showed us that this was our new church home that He had chosen for us, and we joyfully agreed!
In our short time at Curtis, we have made some very dear friends and have grown closer as both a family and as a church family.  We have been blessed to take part in some great fellowship and to be discipled by both the pastors and other members.  We have also had the opportunity to minister to others through some of the church programs which is a blessing in itself.  Of equal importance, both of our children absolutely love the various children’s programs in which they participate, and they have many new friends here.
God has truly anointed our new pastor, and we receive blessings and spiritual nuggets each time he brings us the Lord’s message.  We have already begun to regret when we’ll be moving next!  We know that He has another place of worship in store for us at our next assignment, but it’s difficult to think that it will be as special as Curtis Baptist has been to us.

Generations

My parents (Carl and Jeanette Steed) and my grandparents (Bessie and Rena Sawyer) lived next door to each other on Walker Street, about one and a half miles from Curtis. They became believers and were baptized at Curtis. After some years, my grandfather wanted to move to the country, so my mother and daddy built a house next door to them on Peach Orchard Road (which was country then). We joined a nearby church where I was saved and baptized at age 8. All of a sudden, Peach Orchard Road was not country anymore and when a liquor store was built next to our driveway, my grandfather suggested we build farther out in the country. In Hephzibah we joined another church, which, at the time was a very small country church.

But through all the moves, my family kept saying that they missed Curtis Baptist Church so much - that no other church compared and they were homesick for Curtis.  We began making what, at the time, seemed like a very long drive then drive to Curtis BC and we joined the first Sunday we attended.  It was the day the Bradley Building was being dedicated in 1962. I was 15 years old. I thought this was going to be a horrifying day for me because my Youth Sunday School Department was larger than the whole church I had just left.

It was wonderful. The teenagers opened their arms and loved me to death. Every Friday night our family would attend the Friday Family night in the Activities Area where we would have hot dogs and hamburgers, roller skate, play games and bowl in the four lane bowling alley.

I am so thankful that my family had earlier connections to Curtis. Their experiences before I was even born brought me to Curtis and I have loved this place ever since.  My children and my grandchildren have had so many opportunities at Curtis that I did not have as a young child: Wonderful corporate worship, RAs, GAs, Acteens, mission trips, choir tours, orchestra, children's choirs and youth choirs. They have been taught God’s Word in Sunday School by wonderful teachers, and have learned and grown from some of the best preachers and evangelists in the country.

Five generations in my family have loved Curtis dearly.  Four generations remain members and are attending as often as they can.

Some brides marry into money.
I married into Curtis
Baptist Church!  That’s just the way it was when I married 50 years ago.  A bride was expected to follow her husband to his church.  I know now this was no accident, but by God’s providence.

I love Curtis because it has always been a place where I find opportunities for spiritual growth.  As a young wife I was supported and encouraged through loving relationships found in Sunday School and Baptist Training Union.  As a mother I am grateful for the growing opportunities presented to my children through mission organizations, Bible study, music ministry and youth ministry activities.  As a retired senior adult, I STILL find opportunities to grow through Sunday School, Happy 39ers, Home Bound Ministry, Bereavement Committee, and more.

I love Curtis because it has been a place where the Word of God is preached with no apologies.  I love Curtis because it reaches out to make disciples of those within the church family and beyond.

I love Curtis! I have been here for 16 years, but it's not just the familiarity of the structure that makes me at home, it's the people. I like to see their joy and excitement during worship and in the halls. I have truly witnessed God's sweet spirit in our congregation. I have learned so much about how to pray and how to truly participate in worship. My church home is a place of fellowship...and boy do I like that part! Hebrews 10:25 tells us not to forsake the assembling together but to exhort one another. I really believe Curtis is a great place for this.
I enjoy hanging out with people of all ages. I can seriously sense the wisdom and maturity in my older friends. They are examples and encouragement in my daily walk with Jesus.
Curtis is a place to serve. There is a place and job that suits everyone's spiritual gifts. I enjoy talking and being silly with my Sunday School kids. I love sharing about things I have learned and experienced in life with them as well. I enjoy inviting people to Curtis because I am confident they will be welcomed.
