Colossians 3:12, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion…”
Compassion, as defined by Webster’s 1913 dictionary, is “literally, suffering with another; a sensation of sorrow excited by the distress or misfortunes of another; pity; commiseration.” What an awesome thought, that we are CHOSEN and dearly loved by the Creator and Savior God of the Universe! It is his desire that we be full of compassion, both to those who are lovable and those who are not so lovable. When we see others suffering, whether from uncontrollable circumstances, or from their own poor life choices, do we judge them first or do we see them as Christ sees them? The Lord has placed reminders throughout His word that reveal to us that He sees potential and not just current position. 1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us that “man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” May each of us not only show pity to those who are less fortunate, but be filled with compassion that pushes us to action on their behalf.
Today’s Prayer
Father God, we thank you today for your compassion on us; that while we were filthy sinners, you sent your holy Son to die for us, that you look at our hearts and not our outward appearance. We pray for opportunities today to see others through your eyes. Lord, help us to be filled with sorrow by the distress of others and then sensitive to your Spirit in how to reach out and love them in Your name.
