“Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.” Matthew 18:4 (KJV)

I recently read a story about Hudson Taylor, a missionary who spent his life ministering to the people of China. Taylor was scheduled to speak at a large church in Melbourne, Australia. He was introduced in the most eloquent and glowing terms. After a listing of all of Taylor’s accomplishments in China, participants were asked to welcome “our illustrious guest.” Taylor stood quietly for a moment, and then opened his message by saying, “Dear friends, I am the little servant of an illustrious Master.”

It’s all about perspective, isn’t it? Have you ever noticed how humility comes naturally to some people? But in most cases, it needs to be learned. I’m guilty of being in the later group, are you? The simple truth is, apart from Christ, I am nothing. I have nothing to offer of worth or value other than that which the Lord has shown or given me. The world doesn’t need what I have – they need to see the hope of Jesus that lives within me. We serve a great and mighty God, our “illustrious Master.” When I truly understand who God is – I am humbled in His presence. He must increase and I must decrease (John 3:30).

Today’s Prayer

Lord, today I humbly submit to you my plans, my purpose, and my life. Lord, accomplish in my life today what only You can! I am the little servant Lord and You are a great and mighty God!
