“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10.

We are His workmanship/masterpiece!

This means that God already has us in the palm of His hand ready to work in our lives. He is creating a new life in us through Christ. We are the clay. God is the potter (Jeremiah 18:1-6) waiting to shape, form and use us for His work that He has prepared for us. The being comes before the doing. The lump of clay before the masterpiece. The chunk of rock before the statue. The heap of metal before the monument. The glob of paint before the perfected painting. All bear the imprint of the master before they are useful or beautiful. God is our Master; we are His masterpiece.

We Are Created in Christ for Good Works!

The term good works here has nothing to do with salvation. It is not a work to earn something. It is a work that flows because we already are something in Christ! Ephesians 2:10 says clearly that God has prepared the good works for us in Christ.

God works in us first; then He works through us. So often, we just want to have a job without the wilderness. Give me a ministry, but let’s skip the training or the seeking in the still, lonely places. I believe before we will understand the good works He has prepared for us in Jesus as His workmanship, we will need to try the following:

  • Get alone with God and confess sin.
  • Yield to God’s plans and surrender our own.
  • Seek God in His word; study it; memorize it; let God personalize it.
  • Walk in an attitude of prayer.
  • Look for opportunities from God and always give Him all glory.
  • Be accountable to other believers in honesty and realness.

We Are to Walk in the Work God Created for Us Beforehand!

We walk in the work God created when we:

  • Resist the temptation to work without Him or compare our work with another’s.
  • Rest in relief that He has prepared the work and the path beforehand for us.
  • Register regular times of intimacy with Jesus.
  • Relish in pointing all glory, honor and praise to God for all the work He does through us!
