Matthew 18:21-22: ‘Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”’
That means 490 times! His grace is truly limitless.
“Everyone thinks forgiveness is great, until you have something to forgive ” (C.S. Lewis).
As we sit back and think of what forgiveness truly means it can become very complicated. We like to add ALL our baggage into God’s perfect plan. God’s plan for forgiveness is very clear:
- Pray for those who have evil intentions for you (Matthew 5:44).
- Be full of in love, something only possible when you are really abiding in Christ (Psalm 86:5).
- Never avenge yourself, but leave it to God’s capable hands (Romans 12: 18-19).
- Do good to those who never do good to you (Luke 6:27-28).
- Watch your own life, and ensure you’re not guilty of the sin that’s been committed against you (Luke 17:3).
These are not always easy practices to implement in our lives. We sometimes like to hold grudges and believe we are right. Keep in mind that sin committed against us is nothing compared to the sin that has been committed against God. Pray to our loving God who understands you, your struggles, and your specific situation like no other. Seek him with all your heart, choose to forgive and be set free.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Lord, Thank you that you love us so much that even when we are ugly you choose to forgive us. Help me to forgive others like you do. Pour out your grace on me and allow me to do the same! Amen.
