OUR
BELIEFS

Curtis Baptist Church is guided by foundational beliefs and principles based on God’s own Word. We hold to our Statement of Faith and Doctrine (Baptist Faith & Message 2000 of the SBC) as accurate summaries of the teaching of Scripture.

What we believe

God

We believe that there is one, and only one, living and true God.  He is the creator of heaven and earth, inexpressively glorious in holiness and worthy of all our honor, confidence and love.  We believe that the Godhead externally exists as three persons in one – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – a teaching known as the Trinity.

The Father

God as Father reigns with providential care over His universe, His creatures, and the flow of the stream of human history according to the purposes of His grace. He is all powerful, all knowing, all loving, and all wise. God is Father in truth to those who become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ. He is fatherly in His attitude toward all men.

The Son

We believe Jesus Christ is God’s Son. He was born of a virgin as both God and man, lived a sinless life, died to atone for the sins of human beings, was buried, arose from the grave, ascended into heaven and will literally return to earth.

The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is the divine helper, assistant, counselor and instructor and His work is to reveal Christ, to convict of sin, to lead to repentance, to guide believers, to comfort, to strengthen, and to sanctify the soul.

The Bible

We believe the Bible is God’s Holy Word, without error and is the sole authority for life.

Man's Need for God

We believe human beings are the special creations of God, made in His image. They fell through the sin of the first man, Adam, and all human beings are sinners in need of salvation.

Salvation

We believe salvation is a gift through repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ. Every person who is truly saved is eternally secure in the Lord Jesus Christ and will spend eternity in heaven, while those who die in their sins will spend eternity in hell.

Eternal Security

Because God gives us eternal life through Jesus Christ, the true believer is secure in that salvation for eternity. If you have been genuinely saved, you cannot “lose” it. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian. It is the grace and keeping power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian. It is the grace and keeping power of God that gives us this security.

Eternity

People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation.  To be eternally separate from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.

The Lord's Supper

The Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming.

Tithing

We believe in giving the tithe – ten percent of our gross income (not net income) – as the biblical standard of giving. The tithe is to be given as an undesignated offering to the “storehouse” ministry of a local church. According to Scriptures, we are to give cheerfully, regularly, systematically, proportionately, and liberally for the advancement of the Redeemer’s cause on earth.

Evangelism

It is the duty and privilege of every follower of Christ and of every church of the Lord Jesus Christ to endeavor to make disciples of all nations. The new birth of man’s spirit by God’s Holy Spirit means the birth of love for others. Missionary effort on the part of all rests thus upon a spiritual necessity of the regenerate life, and is expressly and repeatedly commanded in the teachings of Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ has commanded the preaching of the gospel to all nations. It is the duty of every child of God to seek constantly to win the lost to Christ by verbal witness undergirded by a Christian lifestyle, and by other methods in harmony with the gospel of Christ.

The Church

We believe the Church (Curtis Baptist Church) is a local body of baptized believers with the Lord Jesus Christ as the Head.

Baptism

We believe baptism is by immersion after salvation and is done in obedience to Jesus Christ’s command.

THE GOSPEL

The Gospel is the good news that God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son.
